Backpack Fabric Guide: 600D vs 1680D Polyester, Nylon, RPET & Canvas

Fabric is the single biggest driver of how a backpack looks, feels, weighs, wears and prices out. Two bags with identical patterns can sit US$3–4 apart at the factory gate purely because of the face fabric, coating and lining specified. If you are sourcing custom bags, understanding fabric is the fastest way to control both quality and cost — and to talk to a factory in language that gets you accurate quotes.

What "denier" (D) actually means

Denier is a measure of yarn thickness — specifically, the weight in grams of 9,000 metres of a single yarn. A 600D yarn is thicker and heavier than a 300D yarn. Higher denier generally means a tougher, more abrasion-resistant and heavier fabric, but denier alone does not tell the whole story: weave density, the base polymer (polyester vs nylon) and the coating all matter.

A common mistake is to assume "higher D = always better." A tightly woven 420D nylon can outperform a loose 600D polyester in tear strength while weighing less. Denier sets the ballpark; construction sets the result. Here is how the common deniers map to real products:

600D vs 1680D polyester: the workhorse vs the premium

These are the two deniers buyers ask about most, so it is worth comparing them directly.

600D polyester

600D is the most-used backpack fabric in the world, and for good reason. It is affordable, takes printed and sublimated logos well, holds colour, and — with a standard PU coating — gives solid everyday durability. It is the default for school and kids backpacks, promotional bags and most mid-market daypacks. If you do not have a specific reason to go heavier, 600D is usually the right starting point.

1680D ballistic polyester

1680D ballistic uses a heavy two-ply yarn in a basketweave, giving a thick, structured, premium hand-feel and excellent abrasion resistance. It is the fabric you feel on high-end laptop bags, rolling luggage and luxury travel pieces. It costs more, weighs more and is stiffer to sew, but it photographs as "premium" and survives years of airport handling. For business and laptop backpacks aimed at a professional buyer, the upgrade often pays for itself in perceived value.

Polyester vs nylon: how to choose

Both are synthetics, but they behave differently. The short version: polyester is cheaper and more colour- and UV-stable; nylon is stronger and lighter per gram but costs more and can absorb more water unless well coated.

  • Polyester — better UV resistance (colours fade less in sun), better colour retention, lower cost, hydrophobic. Ideal for promotional, school, retail and any sun-exposed product.
  • Nylon — higher abrasion and tear resistance per unit weight, softer hand, used in technical outdoor and tactical packs. Cordura is a branded high-tenacity nylon known for toughness. Costs noticeably more than equivalent polyester.

Ripstop and ballistic weaves

Beyond the base fibre, the weave changes performance:

  • Ripstop — a grid of thicker reinforcement yarns woven in at intervals, so a small tear cannot propagate. Common in lightweight 210D–420D fabrics for packable and outdoor bags.
  • Ballistic — a dense 2x2 basketweave of heavy yarn (the 1680D classic) prized for abrasion resistance and a premium look.
  • Dobby / jacquard — patterned weaves used for a textured, branded face fabric.

RPET: recycled polyester explained

RPET is polyester made from recycled PET — most often post-consumer plastic bottles. The bottles are cleaned, chipped, melted and re-spun into yarn that is then woven exactly like virgin polyester. In 600D and 900D weights, modern RPET is essentially indistinguishable from virgin fabric in hand-feel and durability, and it now carries almost no cost penalty at volume.

For brand and retail programmes with sustainability commitments, RPET is the single most-requested upgrade we see. Look for GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certification, which traces recycled content through the supply chain. We cover this in depth in our sustainable bag materials guide.

Canvas and natural fibres

Not every bag should be synthetic. Cotton canvas (and cotton/poly blends) gives a natural, structured, premium-casual look used in tote bags, heritage daypacks and lifestyle pieces. Canvas is measured in ounces per square yard (oz) or GSM rather than denier — 10oz to 16oz is typical for bags. It takes screen printing and embroidery beautifully but is heavier, absorbs water without a coating, and can wrinkle. Waxed canvas adds water resistance and a rugged aesthetic at a premium. Organic cotton (GOTS-certified) is the sustainable option.

Coatings, linings and weights

The face fabric rarely works alone. A backing coating on the reverse adds water resistance and structure:

  • PU (polyurethane) — the standard, flexible, breathable-ish coating; soft hand; most common on 600D.
  • PVC — heavier, fully waterproof, stiffer; used where wipe-clean durability matters.
  • TPU — premium, abrasion-resistant, recyclable, used for high-end waterproof and welded constructions.

A topside DWR (durable water repellent) finish makes water bead off the face. Linings are usually lighter 210D polyester, and the fabric weight (GSM) you specify directly affects both feel and freight cost.

How to spec fabric with a factory

To get an accurate quote and the right bag, give your factory four things: denier, fibre (polyester / nylon / RPET / canvas), coating (PU/PVC/TPU/none), and target GSM or weight. Frequently asked questions

600D refers to the denier of the fabric — the thickness of the yarn. 600D polyester is the most common everyday backpack fabric: durable, affordable, colourfast and good for printed logos. Higher numbers (900D, 1680D) are thicker and tougher; lower numbers (210D, 420D) are lighter.

For heavy-duty and premium products, yes — 1680D ballistic polyester is thicker, more abrasion-resistant and feels more premium, which suits laptop bags and luggage. But it is heavier, stiffer and more expensive. For most school, promotional and everyday backpacks, 600D is the better value choice.

Polyester is cheaper and holds colour better in sunlight, making it ideal for school, promotional and business bags. Nylon is lighter and more abrasion- and tear-resistant per gram, so it is preferred for outdoor and tactical packs, but it costs more. The coating you add matters as much as the base fibre.
