The base fabric on a bag — the polyester, nylon or canvas you see and touch — sets weight, hand-feel and abrasion resistance. But it is the coating that decides whether that bag shrugs off a rain shower or soaks through in minutes, whether the surface wipes clean or holds stains, and often whether it feels cheap or premium in the hand. Two bags cut from identical 600D polyester can perform completely differently depending on whether they carry a DWR finish, a PU backing, a PVC layer or a TPU laminate.

Face finish vs backing coating: two different jobs
The first thing to understand is that water resistance usually comes from two separate layers doing two separate jobs, and buyers often confuse them.
- The face finish (DWR) sits on the outer surface of the fabric and makes water bead up and roll off rather than soak in. It does nothing to stop water passing through the weave under pressure — it just delays wetting-out.
- The backing coating (PU, PVC or TPU) is applied to the reverse of the fabric and fills the gaps between yarns, so water cannot pass through the weave itself. This is what gives real water resistance and structure.
A well-built weather-resistant bag typically uses both: a DWR face so the outside does not wet out, and a backing so nothing seeps through the fabric body. Neither one alone makes a bag “waterproof” — seams, zippers and the base panel all leak long before the fabric does. We cover that distinction in our guide to bag construction options.
DWR (durable water repellent): the face finish
DWR is a thin chemical treatment applied to the outer face of the fabric so water forms beads and rolls off instead of soaking in. It is not a coating you can see or feel as a layer — it changes only the surface energy of the fibres.
How it is applied: the woven fabric is passed through a bath (pad-dip) or sprayed, then cured with heat so the repellent bonds to the fibres. Older DWR chemistries were fluorocarbon-based (C8, then C6); the industry has largely moved to PFC-free / fluorine-free DWR to meet REACH, Prop 65 and brand sustainability requirements. Fluorine-free versions repel water well but are generally a little less durable and less oil-repellent, so they benefit from occasional reproofing over the bag’s life.
DWR adds almost no weight, no stiffness and very little cost, which is why it is a near-universal upgrade. Its weakness is durability: abrasion, dirt and washing gradually wear it down, and it needs a good backing behind it to actually keep water out.
PU (polyurethane) backing: the everyday standard
PU coating is the default backing for the vast majority of bags. A liquid polyurethane is spread onto the reverse of the fabric and cured, leaving a flexible film that seals the weave. It is measured loosely by how many passes / how thick (sometimes quoted as PU or double-PU).
PU is popular because it hits a sweet spot: soft hand-feel, good flexibility, easy to sew, low cost, and solid water resistance for everyday use. It is the standard behind 600D polyester on school bags, promotional bags and everyday daypacks. Its trade-offs are that it is not fully waterproof under sustained pressure, and cheaper PU can hydrolyse (break down and get sticky or flaky) after years in hot, humid storage. Higher-grade PU and proper storage largely solve this.
PVC backing: heavy-duty and wipe-clean
PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is a heavier, fully waterproof coating that produces a stiffer, more rubbery, wipe-clean surface. It can be a backing on a woven fabric or the whole material can be a PVC-coated tarpaulin (the classic look of messenger bags, cooler liners and industrial totes).
PVC’s strengths are genuine waterproofness, excellent wipe-clean durability and low cost. Its downsides matter for many buyers: it is heavy, stiff (harder to fold and sew cleanly), and raises regulatory flags — phthalate plasticisers and overall PVC content are restricted under Prop 65, REACH and CPSIA, especially for children’s products. If you are targeting kids’ lines or eco-positioned brands, PVC is often the wrong choice; for rugged wipe-clean utility bags it can be ideal. Where a PVC look is wanted without the regulatory baggage, we often recommend TPU instead.
TPU film and lamination: the premium waterproof route
TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) is a premium, abrasion-resistant, phthalate-free film that is heat-laminated or welded to fabric rather than spread on as a liquid. It gives the highest real water resistance of the group and enables welded (stitchless) seams, which is how truly weatherproof roll-top and dry bags are built.
TPU is recyclable, more environmentally acceptable than PVC, and produces a clean, technical, premium look. The trade-offs are cost (materials and welding equipment both cost more) and that welded construction is a different process from standard sewing. Acrylic and other coatings
Acrylic coating is most associated with cotton canvas and outdoor / awning-type fabrics. It adds water and UV resistance and improves shape retention while keeping a fairly natural hand, which is why it suits waxed-look totes and heritage-style canvas bags rather than technical packs. It is less waterproof than PU or PVC but keeps the natural-fibre aesthetic intact. Silicone (Sil) finishes exist for ultralight technical fabrics but are rare in the promotional and retail bag world.

How to choose and spec a coating
Match the coating to the job, not to the biggest number:
- Everyday / school / promo: 600D polyester with PU backing and a PFC-free DWR face covers most needs at the lowest cost.
- Wipe-clean utility or cooler liners: PVC or PVC tarpaulin — but confirm phthalate compliance if the bag is for children.
- Genuine waterproof / technical: TPU lamination with welded seams; budget for higher material and construction cost.
- Natural canvas look with some weather protection: acrylic-coated or waxed canvas.
Give your factory four things and you will get an accurate quote: the base fabric, the backing (PU / PVC / TPU / none), whether you want a DWR face, and your compliance targets (Prop 65, REACH, CPSIA, PFC-free). If waterproofness is a selling claim, decide early whether you need welded seams and a waterproof zipper — those, not the coating, are usually the limiting factor.
