Colour is the fastest way a customer recognises your brand — and the fastest way a bad batch destroys trust. "Make it navy" means nothing to a dye house; "match Pantone 19-3920 TCX" means everything. Custom colourways are where a generic bag becomes your bag, but getting brand colour right in bulk is a process with specific steps, vocabulary and timing that buyers should understand before they brief a factory.

Speak the right colour language: TCX vs TPX
The single most common colour error in bag sourcing is quoting the wrong Pantone system. There are two families that matter here:
- Pantone TCX (Textile Cotton eXtended) — physical fabric swatches, the reference for dyed textiles. This is what your factory wants for fabric colour.
- Pantone TPX / TPG — paper versions of the textile colours, handy for design but slightly different from the cotton standard.
- Coated (C) / Uncoated (U) — the print/graphics swatches your designer uses for logos and packaging, calibrated for ink on paper, not dye on fabric.
A colour will not reproduce identically across these systems, because ink on paper and dye in fibre behave differently. Always give your fabric colour as a TCX code, and keep your logo/packaging Pantone (C/U) separate for printing. If you only have a coated swatch, say so — your factory will translate it to the nearest textile standard during the lab-dip.
Dyeing vs printing: two different things
"Custom colour" can mean two processes, and they behave differently:
Dyeing
The fabric itself is coloured through, before or during manufacture. Dyeing gives rich, durable, consistent colour and is how you achieve a true solid brand shade. It needs a minimum dye quantity, which is one reason custom colours carry an MOQ.
Printing
Colour or pattern sits on the surface of an already-made fabric (screen, sublimation, digital or transfer print). Printing is right for logos, patterns and multi-colour graphics, but a printed "solid" rarely matches a dyed solid exactly, and abrasion resistance differs. Most branded backpacks combine both: a dyed body fabric in your brand colour, plus a printed or embroidered logo. Knowing which process you need shapes everything downstream — a solid brand body colour is a dyeing job and carries a dye minimum, whereas a seasonal graphic or a multi-colour pattern is a printing job and can sometimes run on a stock fabric. When you brief a factory, separate the two clearly: "body dyed to TCX X, logo printed in TCX/Pantone Y." That single sentence prevents a lot of back-and-forth.
The colour-matching workflow
Here is the exact sequence a careful custom colour follows from brief to bulk. Each stage is a gate — don't run bulk until the colour card is signed.

The lab-dip
A lab-dip is a small swatch of your actual fabric dyed to hit your target colour. The dye house usually offers two or three options bracketing the target; you choose the closest or ask for a re-dip. Approving a lab-dip on your real fabric — not a screen, not a print swatch — is non-negotiable, because the same dye reads differently on nylon, polyester, canvas and cotton.
The colour card
Once a dip is approved, it's built into a signed colour card — the master reference for the run, ideally showing the colour on every material it will appear on (body fabric, lining, webbing, zipper tape, trims). Both you and the factory keep a sealed copy. The bulk run is then judged against this card, which removes the "it looks different" argument later.
Matching components, not just fabric
A backpack isn't one material. Body fabric, lining, webbing, binding, zipper tape, pullers and plastic or metal hardware all take colour differently, and a colourway only looks intentional when they agree. Practical rules:
- Decide which components must match the body and which are deliberate contrast.
- Webbing, binding and zipper tape can be dyed to Pantone but may need their own lab-dip.
- Moulded hardware (buckles, sliders) is colour-matched via masterbatch and has its own minimums — confirm early.
- Be realistic about fibre limits: very saturated or fluorescent shades are harder to hit and hold on some synthetics.

Building a colourway, not just a colour
A strong colourway is a small system, not a single swatch. Before you brief, decide the relationship between the parts so the result looks designed rather than assembled:
- Anchor colour: the dominant body shade that carries your brand — the one a customer remembers.
- Secondary & accents: linings, trims, zipper pullers and binding that either match the anchor or provide deliberate contrast (a pop lining, a tonal binding).
- Neutral hardware: buckles and sliders are often left in a standard black, gunmetal or natural rather than custom-matched, which saves cost and minimums while still looking intentional.
- Seasonal variants: once an anchor body is approved, spinning off seasonal colourways is cheap because the construction is unchanged — only the dye target moves.
Thinking in these layers also controls cost. Every component you insist on custom-matching adds a lab-dip and a minimum; choosing where contrast is intentional versus where a standard stock colour is fine keeps both your budget and your timeline sensible.
Why colours drift — and how to prevent it
Even with a good colour card, colour can wander. The usual causes and fixes:
- Different dye lots. Two batches of the same colour can vary slightly. Fix: order all fabric for a run from one dye lot where possible.
- Different materials, same target. Fabric and webbing from separate dye houses drift apart. Fix: approve them together on one card.
- Lighting (metamerism). A match under daylight can mismatch under store lighting. Fix: approve under a standard light source (D65) and check under your retail lighting.
- Monitor vs reality. Never approve colour from a screenshot or photo. Fix: approve only physical lab-dips and cards.
Timing and cost
Custom colour adds time and a minimum, but not as much as buyers fear. Budget 1–2 weeks for colour development (lab-dip plus card) on top of your normal 3–7 day sampling, and remember that dyeing carries a minimum fabric quantity, which is part of why custom colours sit behind the standard MOQ of 500 pieces per style. Reusing an already-approved colour on a repeat order skips most of this. Plan colour development into your seasonal timeline so it doesn't compress your production window.
